DIY Electric Tractor Battery Setup Guide: 48V Systems Explained
The battery pack is the heart of any electric tractor conversion. Get it right and you'll have reliable, long-lasting power for years. Get it wrong and you'll be dealing with poor runtime, premature failures, or worse — safety hazards. This guide covers everything you need to know about selecting, wiring, and maintaining a 48V battery system for your converted lawn tractor.
Why 48 Volts?
48V has become the sweet spot for DIY electric tractor conversions for several reasons:
- Efficiency: Higher voltage means lower current for the same power output, which reduces heat and wiring losses.
- Component availability: Motors, controllers, and chargers designed for 48V are widely available and affordable.
- Safety: 48V is below the 50V threshold considered "extra-low voltage" — safer to work with than 72V or higher systems.
- Performance: More than enough power for residential and light commercial mowing applications.
Battery Chemistry Options
Lead-Acid (AGM or Flooded)
Four 12V batteries wired in series gives you a 48V pack. This is the most affordable entry point.
- Pros: Cheapest widely available, easy to replace individually
- Cons: Heavy (320 lbs for a full pack), shorter lifespan (5-8 years), lower usable capacity (only use ~70% to preserve life)

- Cons: Higher upfront cost ($400–$800 for a quality pack)
- Best for: Builders who want the best performance and lowest long-term cost
How Much Capacity Do You Need?
Battery capacity is measured in amp-hours (Ah). Here's a rough guide:
- Under 1 acre: 100Ah lead-acid or 60Ah lithium is sufficient
- 1–2 acres: 100Ah lithium or 120Ah lead-acid recommended

Wiring Your Battery Pack

- Series wiring (positive of one battery to negative of the next) adds voltages together. Four 12V batteries in series = 48V.
- Parallel wiring (positive to positive, negative to negative) adds capacity. Two 48V 50Ah packs in parallel = 48V 100Ah.
Essential Safety Components
- Main fuse: Install a 100–150A fuse or breaker as close to the positive battery terminal as possible. This is your most important safety device.
- Main contactor: A solenoid or manual heavy duty switch that disconnects the pack when the key is off. Prevents parasitic drain and provides an emergency shutoff.
- Precharge resistor: Limits inrush current when the contactor closes, protecting your controller's capacitors.
- BMS (Battery Management System): Built into lithium packs — balances cells and protects against over/under voltage. Essential for LiFePO4.
Cable Sizing

Charging Your Pack

- Lead-acid: Use a smart charger designed for AGM or flooded batteries. A smart charger adjusts for thr battery state of charge SOC and can fully charge a 48v pack in 4–5 hours and then shut off.
- LiFePO4: Use a charger specifically designed for LiFePO4 chemistry. Never use a lead-acid charger on lithium batteries.
Charging is simple! A 48 V socket is installed on the tractor and when the charger is plugged into this, it prevents the tractor from moving, the charger is installed on a wall inside the garage or sits on a shelf and plugged in to a power bar or 120v outlet with a switch so all you have to do is plug the low-voltage plug into the tractor and press the switch, charging starts and shuts off when the battery is fully charged.
Battery Placement Tips
- Mount batteries low and centred, 50% at the front and 50% at the rear for the best weight distribution
- Secure with steel strapping or fabricated brackets — batteries must not shift during operation
- Allow for ventilation with lead-acid batteries (they off-gas hydrogen during charging)
- Keep batteries away from the motor and controller heat sources where possible
